Vitamin Benefits on Important Health Issues

Vitamin benefits are numerous and far reaching. I could not hope to list all the benefits of vitamins here but I'm going to organize the benefits into broad categories and show you which vitamins are principally responsible for that benefit.

Several of the benefits below reference the vitamin B-complex rather than identifying the properties of individual B vitamins. I do this because all the B vitamins are interdependent and so it's best to take them as a whole rather than just trying to supplement one or two of the vitamin B group.

Antioxidant Vitamins

Antioxidants are nutrients that neutralize free radicals before they can cause permanent harm to your body. Vitamin C is the most important antioxidant vitamin but since particular antioxidants affect specific parts of the body, you cannot rely on one antioxidant alone. Beta carotene, which is a precursor for Vitamin A is also an important antioxidant. Another powerful antioxidant is vitamin E.

Other antioxidants are:

  • Alpha-Lipoic Acid

  • Coenzyme Q10

  • Flavonoids

  • Ginkgo Biloba

  • Glutathione

  • Melatonin

  • Selenium

  • Zinc

Vitamins for Hair Growth

Vitamins A, B-Complex, C, & E are necessary for healthy hair. Vitamin A helps your scalp produce sebum. Improved hair color and prevention of hair loss are among the benefits of the B-complex vitamins. And vitamin E helps to improve circulation in the scalp. Additionally, vitamin C is important to the hair for its antioxidant vitamin benefits. Read more about vitamins for hair growth.

Vitamins for Healthy Skin

Vitamin A helps the skin's ability to produce collagen, an important component of healthy skin. Vitamin E contributes to healthy skin and also helps to make vitamin A more effective. General protection of the skin is the benefit of the B-complex vitamins. And vitamin C also participates in the production of collagen.

Vitamins for Acne Control

All of the vitamins needed for healthy skin are necessary for acne control. Vitamin A has a long history in the treatment of acne and a deficiency of this vitamin can cause acne. A recommended dosage to fight acne is 10,000 IU of beta-carotene. Read more on vitamins for acne.

Vitamins Benefits for Anti Aging

A major factor in the aging process are the harmful actions of free radicals on our bodies. To combat this problem, all of the antioxidant vitamins are needed for slowing down the aging process. While antioxidants can never completely stop the aging process, they will help you to age gracefully. The primary antioxidants are: vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

Vitamins for Energy

The entire complex of B vitamins is necessary for energy production in the body. This group of vitamins is directly involved in converting carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into the energy needed by our bodies. Coenzyme Q10 is a vitamin-like substance that also helps provide energy for the body. Read more about vitamins for energy.

Vitamins to Help Endure Stress

Any type of stress causes the body to use more vitamins. Two primary vitamins for beating stress are the vitamin B-complex and vitamin C.

Vitamin Benefits for Relieving Arthritis

Vitamin B-complex helps to reduce swelling. Inflammation and pain relief are two great benefits from Vitamin C. And the strong antioxidant properties of vitamin E help to protect joints from free radicals.

Prenatal Vitamins

Health authorities single out three important nutrients for expectant mothers: folic acid (vitamin B9), calcium, and iron. Folic acid is important because it reduces the risk of having a baby with a serious birth defect. The damage from folic acid deficiency can occur before you are even aware of the new baby. Consequently, any woman of child bearing age should always make sure her body has a sufficient amount of this vitamin. Calcium is needed to keep the new mother from losing bone mass and to provide for the baby's calcium needs. And the iron is needed to help the mother's and baby's blood to carry oxygen.
